Wrong San Guillermo? Priests say church should revisit, restudy Dalaguete patronage
The Dalaguete parish received today 3 bells from Poland. All are stamped with the name Parokya de San Guillermo de Aquitania. But several priests I interviewed said the identity of San Guillermo or Saint William (a popular name then as now) is conflated from the hagiographies of at least 3 Saints William. Augustinian Father Ric Anthony Reyes said the error was traced to Theodobald and the Bollandists, a group that studies hagiographies or biographies of saints, in the Middle Ages.
The San Guillermo associated with the Augustinians isn’t de Aquitania but de Maleval, the priests said. It was the Augustinians who erected the Dalaguete parish in 1711.
San Guillermo de Maleval was an hermit who died on February 10*, 1157, before the Grand Union. His followers created a congregation after his death and they were called the Williamites. It was the Williamites who became part of the Grand Union when Pope Alexander IV ordered several groups, including the Williamites, to combine into the Order of Saint Augustine.
The image of San Guillermo in Dalaguete is identified by the Augustinians as San Guillermo de Maleval. The retablo of the headquarters of the Augustinians in the region, the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño, houses in one niche the image of San Guillermo de Maleval and not de Aquitania.
Priests I interviewed say the archdiocese should restudy Dalaguete’s patronage. A priest historian suggested that Archbishop Palma issue a decree clarifying the identity of San Guillermo not only in Dalaguete but also in Catmon.
Archdiocesan media liaison officer Monsignor Josepepe Tan told me, “Well it’s really up to the archbishop to make the final decision in dialogue with the stakeholders — the parishioners — with consultation to the commission on liturgy and the dictates of canon law.”

The three bells will replace the 300-year-old in the church, which will be displayed at the parish museum. The new bells cost P4.3 million.

I attended the First Friday Mass at the Our Lady of Help of Christian Chapel in Brgy. Buaya, Lapu-Lapu City. The Traditional Latin Mass was held at 8 p.m. and was followed by adoration until midnight. The chapel is administered by the Marian Corps of Saint Pius X, a traditionalist Catholic society that rejects Vatican II and the changes to the mass. The chapel was built by members of its faithful during the pandemic and is still unfinished.
