Unreachable! The technician monitoring the command Unreachable! The technician monitoring the command line for the ping output cried out to this person in the photo who is trying to align a microwave dish to connect across the channel to Cordova. They are setting up a local network so that students in Gilutungan Island will be able to use their laptops and phones for online learning even without internet connection. They can do this by connecting to a WiFi hotspot that connects to a server hosting the content that then syncs with one across the water, rather than across the world. The reason they have to monitor alignment through ping (and the problem caused by latency - good signal result of position adjustment a second or so back) is because the dish’s interface uses Adobe Flash, which had its EOL or end of life recently - meaning you can no longer run it. Story on this interesting project soon.

STRICT SI PADRE ⠀ Bag-ong Kusog reported a skirm STRICT SI PADRE
⠀
Bag-ong Kusog reported a skirmish breaking out during the December 28, 1930 Innocent's Day mass in San Nicolas when the parish priest, Fr. Emiliano Mercado, asked police to arrest Zacarias Echevarri for not kneeling during communion.
⠀
Echevarri told Fr. Mercado that he already knelt during the mass. They got into an argument and Fr. Mercado asked police sergeant Ciriaco Beltran to arrest Echevarri. Apolinar Abella, identified by the paper as a Provincial Government employee, told Beltran not to arrest the parishioner because of the separation of church and state. The intervention angered Beltran, who threatened to beat up Abella.
⠀
The paper reported this on its January 9, 1931 issue. The report said there were rumors Echevarri and his companions were planning to attend the New Year's Day mass in the parish, refuse to kneel during service, and challenge police to arrest them. Because of this rumor, Fr. Mercado asked the police for help. The paper did not mention what happened on New Year's Day and whether Echevarri did attend the service.
⠀
The paper did say that because of the incident, many parishioners stayed away from the San Nicolas church.
⠀
"Tungod ning pagkatap sa mga polis ug tungod sa bag-ong tulomanon sa simbahan, daghang mga Sanikolasnon nga nangluod sa ilang Kura Pari Mercado ug dili na hinuon mosimba sa San Nikolas. Mahadlok kono sila nga kon masayop sa pagluhod kun pagpanguros ba, buyagon sila ni Pari Mercado ug pagul-on sa simbahan, kun ipadakop ba hinuon sa pulis."

How Metro Cebu residents moved around during Chris How Metro Cebu residents moved around during Christmas holidays
⠀
Mobility data gathered by Google showed how Metro Cebu residents did last-minute grocery shopping leading to Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve and stayed home on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. This one is expected behavior but not only is having the data fascinating, it offers context on the extent of changes in how Cebuanos moved around.
⠀
Visits to Groceries and Pharmacies spiked two days before and on the eve of the holidays before falling off a cliff on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, when stays in Residence went up, although not as high as during strict lockdowns in May.
⠀
The increases in visits to Groceries during the holiday rush were the only times Metro Cebu residents logged visits outside the Residence higher than the baseline in January, before restrictions were imposed on movements to deal with the COVID-19 spread.
⠀
There was also an increase in visits to Parks (which covers beaches) in the days leading to Christmas and New Year but these were way lower than those recorded in January. The highest recorded visits to parks and beaches were on December 23 (-7%), December 24 (-8%), and December 30 (-8%).
⠀
There were spikes in visits to Workplaces on December 19 (-10%) and December 20 (-11%). I wonder whether these indicated office gatherings for the holidays.
⠀
Retail and Recreation, which also covers restaurants, went up to -14% on December 23, which probably indicates people going on Christmas lunches and dinners. Retail and Recreation visits in Metro Cebu for the rest of the year were very low compared with other locations and in relation to the baseline.
⠀
Compared with other urban centers in the Philippines, Metro Cebu recorded significantly lower visits to locations outside the Residence.

Fake news: married gay man claims to be 6 months p Fake news: married gay man claims to be 6 months pregnant, causes stir in 1930s Cebu
⠀
It was a news report that caused quite a sensation in Cebu, especially in “Maktang, Santa Rosa, Ulango, Buol ug Leyte.” A man named Balbino Igot, said to be a sakristan and described by the report as “labing dukirok,” claimed to be 6 months pregnant and dragged doctors and prominent personalities in Cebu to prop up his deception.
⠀
Bag-ong Kusog described Abing, Balbino’s nickname, as married to a woman in Tingo, Olango and that they had children.
⠀
Abing claimed as father a “Moros nga mananagat nga sakay sa usa ka binta” or a Moro fisherman whose vinta docked in Olango.
⠀
Abing claimed to have been examined through Rayos X by Dr. Jose Ma. Borromeo, a claim the doctor denied. Abing also claimed to have been summoned by Bishop Juan Gorordo and to have been examined by a doctor in his presence. This claim was also denied.
⠀
Many people dismissed Abing as a fantabulist and leaders of Opong said he deserved 25 lashes - “25 ka latus sa tiyan aron siya hulian sa iyang kabuang sa gugma sa Moros ug aron dili na magutas ug saba.”

Mobility data show how Cebuanos rushed to grocerie Mobility data show how Cebuanos rushed to groceries on Dec. 24, stayed home on Dec. 25
⠀
This was expected but it’s fascinating to see actual data. Google Mobility Data showed how residents of Metro Cebu rushed to Groceries and Pharmacies with visits hitting 19 percent higher than the baseline figures of January 2020.
⠀
It was the only time that visits to Groceries and Pharmacies - or to any location outside the home - in Metro Cebu exceeded the baseline. Other urban centers in the Philippines logged visits to groceries higher than the baseline several days in mid-December leading to Christmas Eve.
⠀
On Dec. 23, data showed spikes in visits to Parks (which covers beaches) at just -7%, the highest since before our strict quarantine lockdowns. On the same day, visits to Retail and Recreation (which also covers restaurant visits) hit -14 percent, also the highest recovery since before lockdowns.
⠀
Visits to Workplaces, on the other hand, hit the highest recovery compared to baseline on Dec. 19 at -10%. That figure was the highest since before the strict lockdowns. What does it show? Does it indicate a rush to the office to get something in preparation for the long break? Or does it indicate people going to the office for Christmas gatherings?
⠀
Data for Residential locations, on the other hand, showed the highest percentage rise compared with baseline but not by much. It’s not a significant increase compared with recent months, even during the strict lockdowns.
⠀
The data is gathered from users of Google Maps. The changes are calculated by Google “using the same kind of aggregated and anonymized data used to show popular times for places in Google Maps.”

DI TA ANGAY MAGUOL ⠀ If you look hard enough, yo DI TA ANGAY MAGUOL

If you look hard enough, you’ll find something beautiful in ugly people - luxurious hair, beautiful eyes, etc. according to this article in Bag-ong Kusog on December 10, 1937. It invites readers to look around and see the truth in the sanglitanang kinatsila: no hay guapa sin tacha; no hay fea sin gracia “walay kaanyag nga walay apan; walay kangil-ad nga walay pamayhong makabibihag.”
⠀
If your grandparents kept telling you you had beautiful hair or enticing eyes, now you know. Matud pa sa sanglitanang kinatsila, no hay fea sin gracia.

Coming off a long weekend: How Metro Cebu resident Coming off a long weekend: How Metro Cebu residents moved around December 1 update
⠀
Sharp drop in visits to Workplaces but no comparable sharp increase in visits to Parks, which covers beaches, and Retail and recreation, which covers restaurants. Visits to Groceries and Pharmacies, however, increased to the highest percentage, relative to the baseline, since March.
⠀
The numbers in the graph are percentages in changes of visits to a location compared with a baseline of data collected in January.
⠀
The figures fluctuate but the general trend shows Metro Cebu residents mostly staying at home but heading to Groceries and Pharmacies and Workplaces when going out. Visits to Parks, including beaches, and Retail and Reaction, which covers restaurants, are still down. Way down are visits to Transit Stations such as ports and bus stations.

Google Podcasts now allows you to subscribe to sho Google Podcasts now allows you to subscribe to shows through custom RSS feeds. This is a long requested feature by its users. With the update, I no longer have to use two apps for listening to podcasts: Google Podcasts and BBS Sounds.
I subscribe to several BBC podcasts through the built-in Google Podcasts search but somehow my subscriptions to shows like In Our Time, Front Row, and Start of The Week were no longer updating episodes with no options to edit the feed.
⠀
With this update, I'm back to using just Google Podcasts.
⠀
What I like about Google Podcasts is the simplicity by which you could download episodes for offline listening such as when going on a run and then queuing these up into a playlist. I also like that it has a web player that you can use on the desktop or laptop.
