I am the business editor and technology columnist of Sun.Star Cebu, a newspaper in Cebu City, Philippines. I am also a blogger. In 2007, I won the Best Technology Blog award of the first-ever Philippine Blog Awards (PBA) for this blog. In 2011, I won Best Sports Blog in the PBA for CebuRunning, my running website that is currently on hiatus.

I am co-founder, with my wonderful wife, of the new media start-up InnoPub Media. We’re currently doing 2 projects: 1) the data tagging of tourism and heritage sites using quick response or QR codes (see photo of me scanning the marker that we put up at the Heritage of Cebu Monument in Barangay Pari-an above) and 2) the production of electronic guidebooks for tourists.

I was born in the then sleepy town of Polomolok, South Cotabato, where I spent the first 16 years of my life.

I am a member of the UP Brotherhood of the Filipinos 1955 and a founding member of UP Politica. I started in journalism with The Freeman, covering the City Hall beat before moving to the copy desk. I transferred to The Independent Post, a newspaper owned by a cooperative. The Post later closed for lack of funds and I was among the last to stay on with the paper.

After the Post, I transferred to Sun.Star Cebu in 1999 and have been with the paper ever since. I am married to a very wonderful woman and we have two equally wonderful sons.

The postings on this site are my own and don’t necessarily represent my employer’s positions or opinions.

  1. Hi Max,

Usha here from The Star Publications Malaysia. I am a journalist who is currently in Manila specifically at the Ateneo De Manila University completing my summer semester of my MA in journalism.
I need to ask a favour of your good self. I’m doing a paper on citizen journalism and I want to do an email interview with a journalist or editor who is familiar with this topic. I am also doing interviews with malaysian who are into citizen journalism like Malaysiakini and Jeff Ooi, a blogger.I hope you will comply to this request as i would like to provide an interesting perspective of citizen journalism of the two countries. BTW, it is only for academic purposes and not for publication.
Is there any email which I can contact you?
    Thanks,
    Usha

  3. Hello! I am a reader of Sunstar and a long time Luser”linux User”. I was just wondering if you are hosting your blog in your own computer and if you you are using opensource tools such as LAMP.

  4. sir, what courses should i take to design professional wordpress themes….
    kindly mail me….

  5. Hi Ralph,
Sorry I haven’t responded to your question. My site uses a shared hosting account with ASmallOrange. It’s on a LAMP environment. Once of these days, I might become confident with my skills and actually run my own web server. :-)

    Rony,
Just look for CSS/XHTML tutorials and then go through my post on how to convert any template into a WordPress theme. I didn’t take any formal courses, I just read tutorials in blogs and websites. :-)

  6. Hi Kuya Max,

I’d like to interview you via e-mail for the Philippine Blog Awards, to which you’re one of the finalists for the Technology category. Congratulations!

If you’re interested, please contact me via my details in this comment.

    Good luck!

  7. Hey Max. So you are from Cebu. I’m a Cebuano too but now residing in South Dakota USA.

I was wondering if there was ever a Cebuano bloggers meet-up since? If none yet, why not have one? That would be great!

By the way, I used to contribute articles for Sun-Star weekend when I was still in Cebu. Is Maam Irma still there? :-)

  8. First of all I’d like to say congrats to Max on winning the Philippine Blog Awards!
I’m moving to the Cebu-Bohol area in a few weeks and will be starting up an internet cafe running various distros of Linux. I was happy to see that there are some Linux users in the area. Please let me know if there are any Linux Meetups or other people interested in getting together and sharing information about GNU/Linux and Free Software/Open Source! Thanks~

  9. very nice site, sir.

i’ll include you in my blogroll. hope that’s ok.

  10. The Tarsier,
Thanks. Let me know also if you get wind of a meetup.

    Leylander,
Thanks and it’s very ok :-) . You have a greta blog, by the way. If you’re anywhere near P. del Rosario in the afternoon, feel free to drop by at Sun.Star. Maybe we can have coffee at the canteen and some blogging talk :-)

  11. Talksmart,
We’re still trying to organize a Cebu blogger meetup. Yes, Ma’am Erma is still with Sun.Star but she no longer handles Weekend. She’s writing a book on Sun.Star I think and she reviews pages.

  12. Hello Max, read your column Cell Talk today (10 July) & would like to let you know that my company (www.intouch.com.ph) is already capable of making VoIP calls using WiFi enabled cellphones like the Nokia E61 series phones (please see Sunstar 03 May issue on an interview Malou did with me). As a matter of fact, I am currently working with a company that will revolutionize how people access the internet with the use of Wimax. We will not only be giving people broadband accessibility but the appliance to access it as well! Much like getting a post-paid plan from a mobile provider. We plan a soft roll-out by December this year. Boy is PLDT, Smart,Globe, & even Sun in for a Surprise not to mention a run for their money! Should you be interested please feel free to get iNTOUCH with me. Malou or Tita Caballes knows how to reach me. Cheers!

  13. Hi, Max,

How do we reach you via email? We would like to talk to you about Mad Crowd Media.

    Thanks,

    Benito

  29. Hi,

Regarding your experiments on using smart bro pre-paid service with linux…. Perhaps you may want to try using ndiswrapper ( it may do the trick) to load the WinXP dirvers on the smart bro modem….

Wine I think still does not support USB devices very well ( if any)….

You may want to try asking a Linux User Group (LUG) :)

    Good luck, Have fun!

    Gooday to you Max.
I saw your article in the paper on and about trying to have the roads altered to allow better access for those who like running/cycling.
Ebiet your idea has merit, however a big mountain to climb.
As a suggestion! Would it not be better to have the road laws adhered to, by having those lazy shade seeking traffic enforcers do their jobs and for the Transport users (buses/trycicles/single motors be punnished for their blatent disregard for any and all users of the roads.
You and i know there is a simple way to thin out the usage of the roads and that includes unroad worthy vehicles.
There are countries that do not have these problems and when they do it costs the user who broke the law.
Max, you have the ability to continue to hold the authorities to their own resolve. Hoping that you do Peter A Hainsworth, road user and resident of both Cebu City and Cebu Province
