Sad to say, the government itself is guilty of using pirated softwares.

Place your bets, randomly choose an LGU in the Philippines and chances are 8 out of 10 PCs are using pirated software.

Its time for the CICT and the government to walk the talk in its fight against pirated softwares.

Bastich,

I disagree. I'd like to think of myself as a mainstream PC user and I see that many open source products are way better than proprietary ones. As a writer and blogger, Linux is the best desktop for me. It fits my workflow perfectly.

I think it also depends on what you consider as mainstream use. If you mean it to be browsing, photo management, digital media playing, office applications then it's more than ready.

Gaming, in my impression, is trickier but I've heard a lot of games play well with Wine but I don't know, I haven't been playing in a while. Still, many online games are browser-based and can be played in Linux. My son, for example, plays mostly online browser-based games and has no problems playing it in Linux.

Em,
I still owe you an Ubuntu CD and sticker. I'll send you a pack one of these days :-) .

You're right. You might want to read this post: http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/linux-education-concepts-not-applications

Alain,
It's great to be able to meet you :-) Thanks for the cool mor.ph shirt, by the way. If you have some free time in the afternoon when you're here in Cebu, alert me. Maybe we can talk about CMSes, social media, blogging over a cup of coffee :-)

Kudos to Cebu for hosting the POSS. I think its a big step in the right direction for the Philippine IT industry and will fuel more debates on the values of Open Source which is the best thing that could happen on its march to mainstream acceptance.

Great to finally be able to meet you, Max.

Best.

If we roll out linux on all our public schools and making the young students learn and use linux then the next generation would definitely know that Windows is not the only OS in the
market. The government just needs to fully backup the idea and we wouldn't have any problem. The word "FREE" is always the best marketing strategy for anything you want to promote. :)

I don't want to sound like a bastard, but mainstream PC users have no real reason to use Linux or any opensource solutions. It's so easy & cheap to pirate XP or Vista. This is the OS that they use in the office, so why mess around with another OS.

I myself am a Linux user and even I can't say that it's better than commercial products. Linux is just not ready for mainstream use, unfortunately.
